To mark the start of Baby Loss Awareness Week, the Government has announced they're offering baby loss certificates for any family who's lost a baby before 24 weeks, no matter when their loss happened.
Previously, the certificates were only available to those who'd been through loss since 1 September 2018. But from today (9th October 2024), the certificates will be available to all England residents aged 16+ who've sadly lost a baby before 24 weeks.
We know this will be welcome news for many families, Jo Richler at Manchster Sands said: "We have been lobbying for this, it is important that there is a formal recognition."
"It's only a piece of paper but it's the most wonderful piece of paper, it means you aren't invisible, the journey and loss you faced is recognised."
The government said it was committed to ensuring bereaved parents were supported during what is a difficult time.
Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting said: "I'm pleased we can now ensure all parents are able to apply for these certificates, no matter how long ago they lost their pregnancies.
Jo added: "For all the parents out there, do it for yourself.
"This is the final piece of the healing journey."
